Miami Dolphins final 53 roster predictions: Quarterbacks
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins will cut down to their final 53 sometime between Friday and Saturday at 4:00 p.m. eastern. Who will make the quarterback unit?
This years crop of Miami Dolphins quarterbacks come down to three players. Brock Osweiler, David Fales, and Bryce Petty. Earlier this week head coach Adam Gase was asked whether or not his back-up quarterback was on the roster.
"(Can you say with certainty that whoever starts the season as the backup quarterback is on the roster right now?) – “Yes.” – Adam Gase via the Miami Dolphins."
While the question was followed up with another about the quarterbacks Gase didn’t go into much if any detail. The fact that one of the three quarterbacks will be on the roster when the season begins doesn’t necessarily mean anything. The season actually begins on Friday when the Dolphins finish the exhibition season. Maybe they should have asked if the QB would be there opening day.
Ryan Tannehill is the starter so he is also a lock to make the roster. That leaves the aforementioned three. Who will take that roster spot? Will there be two quarterbacks kept as back-ups?
Gase has not actually said he would consider keeping three quarterbacks but he never actually ruled it out either. The chances of the Dolphins carrying three is a bit hard to imagine but stranger things have happened.
Prediction: Ryan Tannehill and Brock Osweiler
Editors note: At the time of the original publishing, I had David Fales as the predicted winner for the back-up job. Adam Gase started Osweiler at QB for the 4th and final pre-season game which tells me that he is confident in Osweiler. Osweiler has had a good game through two quarters leading the Dolphins to three touchdown drives.
Brock Osweiler has the name but don’t believe that Osweiler has any standing over Fales because of his time in Denver with Gase. Gase has a history with Fales as well. Osweiler has been wildly inconsistent this entire pre-season and while there is a game tonight, it’s doubtful he could do enough to make up for the bad camp he has had.
Bryce Petty is simply the odd man out and really has been all camp long. At times he has played better than Osweiler but that really isn’t saying much.
David Fales has a lot of flaws in his game and he is inconsistent but he has also demonstrated a better handle over the offense and he has shown a better ability to create time in and out of the pocket. I believe this will be the reason he is kept over Osweiler.
