Final prediction of the Miami Dolphins 2018 WR unit
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins wide-receivers are going to be hard to predict this weekend when the team begins making cuts. It’s more about availability than talent.
When the Miami Dolphins begin making their cuts the wide-receiver position is going to be an interesting one to watch primarily because of one player. DeVante Parker. Parker is not in danger of being released or traded for that matter but he may be the reason Miami keeps six wide-receivers.
With Parker having a broken finger and unable to catch footballs the Dolphins will likely carry six receivers into next week. It very well could be a short-lived final 53 roster spot however. It’s easy to predict the top five but that sixth position could be tough.
Kenny Stills, Albert Wilson, Jakeem Grant, Danny Amendola, and of course Parker make up the top five receivers on the Dolphins roster. The final spot, should the Dolphins opt to keep six will be up for grabs between Leonte Carroo, Isaiah Ford, Rashawn Scott, and Francis Owusu.
Leonte Carroo has been given every chance to get on the field and stay on the field but nagging injuries, inconsistent practices, inconsistent pre-season games, and a struggle with the play book has Carroo on his last leg but the injury to Parker may have extended his life for at least another week.
Isaiah Ford has a lot of talent but it’s unrealized at this point and while the Dolphins believe they got a steal in the 7th round in the 2017 draft, Ford had as many low moments as he did high ones through camp and pre-season. Still there is a lot of potential there and that potential could be the catalyst to keeping him over Carroo.
For the most part the competition begins and ends there. Scott leap frogged Carroo not once but twice over the last two seasons. He just hasn’t taken the next step that Miami thought he could take. Owusu showed a lot of promise early in camp and in the first weekend of pre-season but he has cooled considerably since then.
Prediction: 6 – Parker, Stills, Amendola, Grant, Wilson, and Carroo
Previous predictions can be found here and here.
There are still some lingering questions about Ford and I think Miami believes that they can pass him through waivers and stash him on the practice squad. I also don’t see Carroo lasting the season in Miami.
