The Miami Dolphins have their first big injury of the season losing tight-end Marqueis Gray to an Achilles injury suffered in practice on Wednesday.

With Marqueis Gray now out for the season the Miami Dolphins brought back camp tight-end Gavin Escobar. It’s an odd decision to bring back a 4th tight-end when the Dolphins already have what they believe to be good tight-ends.

The Dolphins, before Escobar’s return, still had rookies Mike Gesicki and Durham Smythe as well as A.J. Derby on the roster. It is possible that Gase either does not believe his rookies are quite ready yet and that Derby is still a project. That would explain Escobar’s return.

With Gray now out the Dolphins will likely have to push Gesicki a little harder but the early part of the season will likely see Derby taking a lot of reps on offense.

The Dolphins had high hopes for Gray who they believe was trending in the right direction. There was little question that he was going to be a part of the offense but how much remained unseen.

Escobar came to the Dolphins as a free agent this off-season. A former 2nd round pick of the Dallas Cowboys, Escobar never really developed in Dallas to his full potential. Through this off-season with the Dolphins, Escobar has been average but never showed enough to be considered a lock or even having a really good chance to make the final 53.

Adam Gase has told the media that has been hiding his intentions on how he will use his tight-ends this season going so far as to keeping Gesicki out of the passing game through pre-season. He may have no choice but to use him come Sunday against the Titans.
