The Miami Dolphins defensive end depth is depleted with injuries to William Hayes and Andre Branch. On Tuesday the team was forced to make additions.
According to a report by Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Miami Dolphins have added a linebacker and is expected to sign a player off their practice squad as early as today.
On Sunday, the Dolphins lost William Hayes for the entire season with a torn ACL. The 11 year veteran injured the knee on a sack of Derek Carr trying to avoid full weight contact per NFL rules. The team also lost Andre Branch from 2-4 weeks with a knee sprain. Also injured was linebacker Chase Allen who hurt his ankle. He, according to Jackson, doesn’t believe it to be serious.
Miami auditioned several players on Tuesday including free agent defensive ends, Kony Ealy and Robert Ayers but the Dolphins instead opted to sign linebacker Martrell Spaight. Spaight a former 5th round draft of the Washington Redskins in 2015 will add veteran depth to the linebackers and defensive ends. He has one interception in his career.
In addition to Spaight the Dolphins are signing Jonathan Woodard off their practice squad. Woodard spent all of training camp with the Dolphins and was released during final cuts. To make room for the roster moves the Dolphins placed Hayes on IR and released WR Tanner McEvoy, as opposed to one of the four quarterbacks on the 53 man roster.
Finally after leaving Indianapolis without a deal, defensive Cameron Malveaux, according to Jackson is set to sign back on to the practice squad. The Dolphins will have two practice squad spots available. The team waived long snapper Lucas Gravelle.
