Miami Dolphins release Jordan Phillips after blowout loss to Patriots
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins have released defensive lineman Jordan Phillips a full day after their big loss to the Patriots in Foxboro.
The news about Jordan Phillips release came by the man himself in a tweet on social media. He wished his teammates well and said it was good to be “out of there”. With Phillips now gone the Dolphins are very thin at yet another position.
Phillips release comes on the heals of a verbal “argument” on the sidelines Sunday. While he has had some good games he is an average defensive lineman who takes plays off and doesn’t tend to give 100% while on the field. This was a big knock on him out of college.
Drafted in the 2nd round of the 2015 NFL Draft, Phillips never became a dependable front defensive lineman showing only flashes. He entered the 2018 season on the 4th year of his rookie contract.
The Dolphins reportedly are working out several offensive and defensive lineman today and tomorrow.
Releasing Phillips is a big surprise but should it be? In a contract year Phillips is not playing the kind of football that Adam Gase wants and he hasn’t emerged as a locker room leader, in fact, judging by this decision, he is the opposite.
Gase has a trend with these types of players. In 2016 he released Jamil Douglas, Dallas Thomas, and Billy Turner following two early season losses. In 2017 after a big loss to the Ravens, Gase traded Jay Ajayi. Now again, a big loss and a veteran players is on the street. In the off-season Gase got rid of Jarvis Landry and Ndamukong Suh. Apparently the makeover continues.
With Phillips now gone, Bobby McCain is the only draft pick left from the 2015 draft outside of first round pick DeVante Parker. It continues to appear that Parker will be out at the end of the season barring a big turnaround.
As for Phillips we will keep you updated on why this release occurred and what the Dolphins are planning to do to replace him.
