Miami Dolphins defensive end, Cameron Wake faces an uncertain future
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins will play host to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday and it might be the last time that Cameron Wake plays in front of his home crowd.
After the 2018 season ends, Cameron Wake will have a decision to make. Retire, return to the Miami Dolphins, or play somewhere else. He doesn’t know what his future holds but it seems as though it is in the Dolphins hands. At least for now.
Wake spoke with the Media this week and his future with the team was brought up. Joe Schad of the PalmBeachPost reported that Wake isn’t ruling anything out. At all.
"“Another jersey?” Wake said Friday. “Ideally, no. But I mean, again, if option number one is not in my favor and they don’t want me but I can still play and I can still provide and still enjoy it whatever needs to happen. If it makes sense then I’ll do it. If it doesn’t then I won’t.”"
Wake earned a little over $8.5 million in 2018 and will be a free agent at the end of the season. The decision on his future will be one that both he and the team will have to make. The Dolphins are thin at defensive end and could, rather should, part ways with Robert Quinn after the season. Andre Branch could also be released. If both of those happen then Wake will more than likely be at least offered another contract.
Wake trails only Jason Taylor for most sacks in franchise history and given the fact he will be turning 37 soon it is unlikely that even if he stays he will catch up to Taylor’s record. Wake has 96.5 but only 4.5 this season.
The future for Wake is no more uncertain that it was two years ago when he signed a two year $19 million deal or last year when speculation ran rampant that Miami may release him to save cap space. It didn’t happen.
Wake missed a couple of games this year with an injury early in the season but is still applying consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Chances are if Wake wants to continue playing and playing for the Dolphins, the Dolphins will bring him back if the price is right.
