Miami Dolphins search for a new DC could prove difficult
By Brian Miller
When the Miami Dolphins season ends this weekend many believe that a change at defensive coordinator will be made, but it won’t be easy.
Miami Dolphins DC Matt Burke should be coaching his final weekend of football for the Miami Dolphins. He can use all the excuses about injuries and so forth being a part of the defensive problems, he can say that “no one cares” if that is what he points towards. The problem is that when they were healthy, they still were not very good.
If Matt Burke survives the end of the season it would be a major shock but finding his replacement for the 2019 season will not be an easy one and Adam Gase is the reason why.
Finding a coach that can come in and run a similar scheme isn’t all that hard but finding a really good coach that is willing to come in on what may be a one year deal is a lot harder. This is where the status of Adam Gase comes in.
There is no certainty that Gase makes it to the 2019 season. He said he isn’t “lobbying for his job” and that he will talk with owner Stephen Ross when Ross calls him in. If he is retained there is no question that 2019 will see him on the hot seat from the start. That means that 2019 very well could be Gase’s last unless the team plays well enough to get to the post-season. It also means that there is little job security for the person who takes on the defense if Burke is gone.
Gase could look internally and promote a defensive coach to DC but that is what he did with Burke. Rumors had circulate in 2017 that Ross “made” Gase promote from within instead of going outside like Gase wanted. Whether that is true or not is unclear but this off-season could prove to be a bit harder.
Naturally there will be names brought up and those coaches who may be looking to get back to a head coaching job may look at Miami as a nice project that maybe they can turnaround and build upon their resume.
Vance Joseph and Todd Bowles are two current head coaches who will likely be out of work in another week. Ironically both are former Dolphins DC’s. Could one return for what could be one year? Maybe.
At this point everything is speculative until we hear what Gase plans to do with Burke after the season and what Ross plans to do with Gase. You can however expect a lot to be talked about in the first week of 2019 once this season is officially in the books.
