The Miami Dolphins are tasked with finding the teams next head coach. That head coach will be tasked with filling a staff.
When Adam Gase took over the Miami Dolphins three years ago the one common opinion was that Gase needed to find the right assistant coaches. He didn’t. Well he didn’t do all that well. You could argue that Vance Joseph was a good pick to run the defense but Matt Burke was not.
The next head coach must take a more streamlined approach and put his ego aside. Finding the right coaching staff is more important than finding a great head coach. The Adam Gase experience should teach that.
Gase hired good quality coaches but made a big mistake with Burke. The problem Gase had was his ego didn’t allow him to turn over play calling to either of his two OC’s, Clyde Christianson or Dowell Loggains.
When the Dolphins finally get to a new hire, that coach must be able to bring in quality coaches that have experience doing their jobs. It won’t hurt if they can do their jobs well.
The Dolphins have issues on both sides of the ball. Neither side has an identity and neither side knows which direction they are heading in. Not year to year and not week to week. Those positions need to be held by coaches who are accountable for their positions with the team. More importantly they need to know what they are doing.
In reality however, most of the time assistant coaches are filled from the head coaches previous team as they take positional coaches and elevate their responsibilities in new roles. Hiring a well respected head coach will help find coaches who want to work for that person. Hiring coaches with little experience makes that process a little harder but not impossible.
This is one are that Miami needs to improve in when a new head coach is hired.
