The Miami Dolphins will not make a head coaching decision today but they could be calling Kris Richard to offer him the job.

According to multiple reports on social media, Kris Richard has emerged as the Miami Dolphins favorite to fill their head coaching vacancy but it should also be noted that any “report” could just be speculation.

There has been a lot of chatter that since the John Harbaugh trade is now unlikely and the cancelled interview of Vic Fangio that Miami is now leaning heavily towards Richard. The question is where does Darren Rizzi fit in all this?

Rizzi will be interviewed this week according to most reports but there seems to be a feeling that Chris Grier’s past association with Seattle coach Pete Carroll is swaying his decision. Grier cited Carroll as one of his mentors from Grier’s early years in the NFL with Carroll in New England.

Richard worked under Carroll and really developed into a quality coach and an instrumental part of the Legion of Boom defense that the Seahawks employed for years with Richard Sherman.

Miami appears to be leaning toward a defensive coach but there are still decisions to be made. According to one report by Chris Kouffman, the chance are very slim that Brian Flores of the Patriots gets another call.

Richard is one of my top two or three options with Rizzi being the only other real choice now that Fangio is out of the picture. The question is what will Richard bring to a team that is rebuilding and will Stephen Ross look beyond the first three seasons before making a determination on Richard’s future?

Rebuilds are not fun and are risky given the fact that if they do not work, you could be in for another one in less than five years with yet another head coach. The Dolphins need to get this hire right or hire a coach that can simply bridge the rebuild which is near impossible to find.

Richard is still coaching with the Cowboys who advanced to the division round of the playoffs over the weekend. They will face the Rams in Los Angeles this coming weekend.
