With so many holes Miami Dolphins need to wait on quarterback

The Miami Dolphins are going to get a lot of attention when the draft talk starts to pick up. Especially as they relate to the quarterback position.

When the NFL Draft kicks off in April there will be a lot discussion about the Miami Dolphins moving up for a signal caller or drafting one at pick 13. They shouldn’t. They should wait. They should fill some other holes first.

Free agency in 2019 isn’t going to be a great year for a quarterback because starting quarterbacks rarely hit the open market. Maybe a Nick Foles type to bridge the gap from 2019 to 2021 where a drafted quarterback can have a year to sit behind him. The list pretty much ends there.

In fact the Dolphins may want to just skip the whole free agency thing all together as it relates to quarterback. Let David Fales and Luke Faulk compete to start. Maybe Faulk is a gem after all. What the Dolphins should do is build the team around a quarterback they haven’t drafted yet.

It starts with the trenches.

The 2019 draft is deep with defensive lineman and we are talking about really good run stuffing pocket collapsing defensive lineman. Which happens to be a big need for the Dolphins. There are really good defensive ends as well.

What the Dolphins and their new head coach should be counting on is finding the right offensive lineman that can play physical football and that are well-disciplined. Add a corner or another linebacker in free agency and get younger through the draft.

When the 2019 season is over Miami won’t tank for anyone but there shouldn’t be high expectations given their schedule and the likely rebuild that is coming. In other words, the Dolphins should be in a really good position to draft Oregon’s Justin Herbert in 2020’s draft and already have the line in place to protect him and a promising defense as well.

Fans want to see Dwayne Haskins or Kyler Murray. They want to “tank” for Tua Tagovailoa but there are many other options that won’t involve trading draft picks that are very much-needed to rebuild the roster.

It is going to be a very interesting off-season this year for Chris Grier and whomever the Dolphins hire to be the head coach. A lot of changes are expected.
