The Miami Dolphins have a new head coach and a new assistant general manager and new guy in charge of it all. Chris Grier is running his first draft.

Chris Grier has spent a long time with the Miami Dolphins but this year he will run his first NFL Draft despite being the teams general manager for the last few years. Everything is now in his hands.

In 2008 Bill Parcells fired Randy Mueller and installed his own general manager, Jeff Ireland. For two seasons Jeff Ireland did what Bill Parcells told him and then when Parcells left the Dolphins, Ireland ran his first draft. Ireland didn’t do a great job. In 2012 Ireland ran his last draft as the Dolphins moved on to Dennis Hickey.

Hickey ran his first draft with the Dolphins but then gave way to Mike Tannenbaum. Tannenbaum has run the Dolphins draft since. When Adam Gase was hired in 2016 he and Tannenbaum were the ones behind the drafts with Chris Grier giving his input and stressing certain players but ultimately, the decision wasn’t his to make.

That changes in 2019.

Grier will work closely with Marvin Allen who was added as the assistant general manager. Allen is a very well respected and talented talent evaluator and was part of a Bills draft that landed Josh Allen and Tremain Edmunds. He was also part of the Chiefs staff that brought Patrick Mahomes. In Miami he will be Grier’s eyes and ears in the college ranks.

Grier will also work closely with Brian Flores to find the right types of players that Flores is wanting for his team. Those with the right mental make-up and team first goals. The three of them will make the decisions on players but every decision now falls on Grier.

Grier has the right temperament for the job and is a very good communicator with the executives and coaches. His decades of scouting talent should really help this year as he can focus on the talent he likes the most. It should be a smooth transition without much if any friction. It would be a big change from the last decade when drama woiuld slip into the war room every now and then.
