The Miami Dolphins are going to likely sit out free agency as it pertains to adding top quality talent  but Trey Flowers should be the exception.

When the doors open to the annual NFL meat market known as free agency, the Miami Dolphins will not likely camp out ahead of the big sale. Instead, they will grab some coffee and maybe a newspaper and then stroll to the storefront and see what is left. This is after all the rebuild year.

If the Dolphins are rebuilding, and they are, they should still look to the future with at least one player who would immediately make the team better this year and the years to come. Trey Flowers. Flowers was the star on the Patriots defense this year and it seemed he was everywhere on the field against the Rams in the Super Bowl.

While the Dolphins may not want to go big on any singular player Flowers would be the ideal transitional fit for Brian Flores who is trying to reestablish the Dolphins defense. He knows the scheme, he knows the coach, and he is a leader that can teach the others how to do it right.

Spending money on free agency in the past hasn’t worked well for the Dolphins but looking back at some of those mistakes you have to wonder if the player with the big name was nothing more than a square peg trying to be shoved into a round hole. Many times those players didn’t fit or came with a lot of baggage.

Flowers doesn’t have baggage, unless you consider the Super Bowl rings he has in his pocket. Flowers is fast and reads the offense well. He has a physicality about him that Miami lacks at almost every position. Physicality is great but Flowers is intelligent. His read and react time is quick and he is decisive in what he does on the field.

Miami may not want to spend a lot of money this off-season and they certainly have more needs that will need to be filled but Flowers is young and knows what it takes to win. That is something that Miami needs especially as they transition to a Brian Flores led team.

The Dolphins likely won’t target Flowers who should have a lot of suitors. Flowers can the help the team but like Xavien Howard, by the time this teams is ready to compete in another three years, they will be on the end of the contract so really when it’s weighted against itself, is there are reason to add him? Maybe not, it’s the same arguement that is used to trade Xavien Howard which we will address in another post today.
