Five Miami Dolphins cuts that carry no dead cap space
By Brian Miller
Akeem Spence – $3.2 million
It will get interesting with Spence who will cost the Dolphins next to nothing for a defensive tackle. Like Quinn however, Spence isn’t a solid option for a switch to a 3-4 and the Dolphins are rather thin at the defensive tackle position.
The NFL Draft could give the Dolphins a chance to upgrade the defensive line with a much bigger nose-tackle that is more apt to play a 3-4 role which would make Spence expendable. If the Dolphins are going to run multiple defensive looks, then Spence could have a roster spot if nothing else for depth but it would take a restructure to get fill that role.
The graft above does not show his 2019 salary which is $3.250 for the 2019 season, the last of his contract. Miami of course would get back all of that money. They would have to use most of it to find a replacement for Spence.
In 2018 Spence had some good games and some bad games but the Dolphins ranked near the bottom against the run and Spence was part of that defensive rotation. It is likely that the Dolphins would want to move on from Spence and spend the money on a replacement.
