The Miami Dolphins are re-building their roster but don’t tell Chris Grier that they are purposely tanking or trying to lose.

At the NFL Combine this morning Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier spoke with the media and was asked about the team “tanking”. Grier assured them they are not but he did say that they are indeed rebuilding.

Grier talked about Stephen Ross and specifically about the first press conference where Ross said that Adam Gase was fired in part because he wanted to win now which many took as message that the Dolphins were not wanting to do that. As the weeks ticked by it became clearer that the Dolphins intentions were to re-build their roster over the next few seasons.

Through all of this rumors began to circulate that the Dolphins were going to “Tank for Tua” in reference to Alabama quarterback Tua Tagoviola who will be one of the top quarterbacks of the 2020 draft. Some of this was heightened by Miami Herald columnist Armando Salguero who initially drove that train on social media.

Grier says that the team is not tanking and not trying to lose every game. He said that they will indeed rebuild the roster and as he puts it, “hopefully the right way” and then see what happens. Miami may have interest in a quarterback this year but the 2020 draft class which consists of Tagoviola, Justin Herbert, and Jake Fromm to name a few is considered to be a very good year for NFL caliber QB prospects.

It is believed or speculated that the Dolphins will build their roster from the trenches and then outwards. This should be a familiar theme for the Dolphins who saw Bill Parcells attempt to do the same thing in 2008. Bill Belichick is part of the Parcells tree so the ideology of that is not lost on Belichick’s former coaches Brian Flores and Chad O’Shea or Grier who has ties to the Belichick administration through his father.
