The Miami Dolphins are wanting to trade Ryan Tannehill but they can’t find a buyer meaning they keep him or release him.

When and if the Miami Dolphins move on from Ryan Tannehill this off-season he will face a plethora of free agent quarterbacks that he will need to compete with for a job and frankly, it’s unclear where he may end up.

Reports over the weekend indicated that the Jacksonville Jaguars will sign Nick Foles once the league new year begins on March 13th. That is one less team that would want Tannehill. It’s not all about the teams that want him but the competition to find a team.

There are rumors starting to surface that the Raiders may move on from Derek Carr but Tannehill wouldn’t be a fit with Jon Gruden. The Bengals are content for now to keep Andy Dalton and the Broncos will be releasing Case Keenum. Teddy Bridgewater is a free agent, and while he lacks experience, he is younger and has more potential for longer-term stability.

Washington is a likely landing spot for Tannehill but it won’t be through trade. They will let Miami eat that contrat and offer him a far less one or two year deal while they wait for Alex Smith to recover from his broken leg.

The truth is there are not a lot of options for Tannehill this year in the NFL and aside from the Redskins and maybe the Raiders if Carr is released, Tannehill could find himself starting next year. If not, he is likely going to take on a back-up role or join a team that drafts a rookie quarterback and hold the fort down until that rookie is ready to take over later in the year.

Tannehill’s best option may be to sit the off-season out and wait for training camp when the injury bug inevitably hits a team and then get paid a bit more. Regardless it appears that the market for Tannehill as a trade option or a free agent option won’t be great. At least not immediately.
