While many thought that Devante Parker’s time in Miami had come to an end, it seems that the wide-out is ‘receiving’ another chance to make his time with the Dolphins a success.

This new chance comes in the form of a two year restructure/extension that is worth $10M (and up to $13M with incentives).  Parker was originally under contract with the Dolphins on his 5th year option at $9.4M and was expected to be released.

Is this a good thing for the Dolphins?

Without knowing the contract specifics, I would overwhelmingly say that it is.  I can’t imagine that the signing bonus will be very large and, from reports I have heard, the contract has no guaranteed money in the second year which makes it essentially a one-year “prove it” deal.

Is this a good thing for Parker?

Parker wasn’t going to garner a big contract in free agency if he was released because his four years in Miami have been riddled with injuries and a lack of production.  Additionally everything I have heard says Parker wanted to remain in Miami; since head coach Adam Gase is no longer here.  It was no secret that Parker and his agent didn’t see eye-to-eye with how Gase handled his time in Miami; especially towards the end of last year.

What does this mean going forward?

Parker has one year/chance to revive his career in Miami and the Dolphins keep a 6’3″, field-stretching WR in the mix to pair with Kenny Stills, Jakeem Grant, and Albert Wilson.  This move doesn’t mean that the Dolphins are done looking for ‘depth’ at the position considering Parker’s injury history and that both Grant and Wilson are recovering from major injuries that put them on Injured Reserve to end 2018.  Given the Dolphins new commitment to prudent/economical signings, fans should look for low cost veterans, draft picks and/or undrafted free agents.

For all the negativity that has come from fans and media lately, it’s nice to cover a ‘win/win’ situation for this team for a change.
