Blake Bortles makes sense for Miami Dolphins

Listen I want Teddy Bridgewater. I think he would be a great QB for the Dolphins.  Plus you add in the reunion of him and Devante Parker and we can already start thinking about those long bombs for 6.

But the truth of the matter is that the Dolphins offered a 2 year 10mm contract for Teddy.  That was not to his liking and left Miami without signing a contract.

To put it in perspective….Tyrod Taylor, a QB the Dolphins targeted, got 7MM a year from the Chargers for 2 years.  So there is no way Teddy is going to say yes to that contract, unless there are some lucrative incentives (-similar to what the Jets did last year).  If the Dolphins up their anti to around 16MM or 17MM for 2 years – they will lose their ‘hypothetical’ 3rd round compensatory pick from Juwan James bouncing to Denver.

Players that don’t count against the compensatory draft pick formula are players that are released.  Basically anyone that is not a free agent.  Dwayne Allen doesn’t count – he was cut.

Andre Branch, Josh Sitton and any other players that Dolphins cut will not bring the Miami Dolphins anything.  Cameron Wake was a free agent and he signed with the Titans – he could potentially bring the Dolphins an additional 5th round pick.

So back to the QB – of the players that are remaining, the best on the market for a player that has been released is Blake Bortles? Process of elimination….it doesn’t bode well for the Dolphins, but at least it won’t interrupt their re-build.

Bortles is similar to Tannehill – a top 10 pick, that never lived up to his expectations, unless he was playing the Dolphins (-remember that London game).  If you look towards the draft, this year QB class sucks.  Sorry, but it’s the truth.

There isn’t someone that I’m willing to select or use a first round pick on.  There is also the idea of trading for Josh Rosen (the odd man out in Arizona)- which I’m okay with, if the Dolphins get him for a 3rd rounder,  they get that pick back with the compensatory pick for J.James.

So it comes down to Bortles or Rosen…

Rosen brings the most reward but cost a pick.  Bortles doesn’t cost a pick and could be had for the 10MM for 2 year contract.

Based on that – my pick is Bortles. And with that decision, I’m scared for the upcoming season, but trust the front office on building a team via the draft and for the future.
