Miami Dolphins Reshad Jones next in line to get dumped
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins are not done purging their roster and safety Reshad Jones looks to be the next one on the list of veterans heading out the door.
According a report by the Miami Heralds’ Armando Salguero the Dolphins will try to trade Reshad Jones and if they can’t, he could be released.
"That means next offseason Reshad Jones, 32 years old in 2020, will likely be cut after the team tries to trade him. – Salguero"
At 32 years of age, Jones is winding down his career but the Dolphins are purging high-priced veterans to make way for their rebuild that will really kick into gear in 2020’s off-season. By trading Jones the Dolphins can get something in return while ridding some of the salary. If he is released he would be designated a June 1st release. Saving the team around $13 million in cap space.
Jones is expendable for two reasons, his play has started to slide and the Dolphins want to keep last years first round pick Minkah Fitzpatrick as a safety. Jones is simply too expensive. He signed a contract extension two years ago in a deal that was really bad for the Dolphins. Another contract overseen by Mike Tannenbaum.
Of course there is also the quitting on his team. Last year in week two Jones decided after an argument with an assistant defensive coach that he was taking himself out of the game. He played one quarter and sat on the sidelines.
His decision to remove himself burned a lot of fans and some of his teammates. In his prime he was one of the best in the league and made the Pro Bowl but since his contract his play has slipped. That could be in part to the Matt Burke defense that struggled in every area on the field.
If he does indeed get traded it will be interesting to see what Grier can get for him. The Dolphins have moved on from a lot of the 2018 starters including Ryan Tannehill, Frank Gore, Ja’Wuan James, Josh Sitton, Danny Amendola, Cam Wake, Robert Quinn, and Andre Branch.
It is going to be interesting to see how the Dolphins fill these holes.
