Miami Dolphins dipping into the AAF again signing Jayrone Elliot
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins have been watching Allegiance of American Football film lately and are set to sign Jayrone Elliot to the roster.
Last week the Miami Dolphins added an offensive lineman, Michael Dunn, from the now suspended league. Today we learn that they are adding a pass rushing defensive end/linebacker.
For Elliot the Miami Dolphins will be his third NFL team. He was signed by the Green Bay Packers in 2014 after going undrafted. He made their opening day roster and registered a forced fumble and an interception against the Seahawks on Sunday Night Football that year.
In 2017 the Packers traded Elliot to the Cowboys for a 7th round draft pick. He was waived in September. Elliot sat the rest of the season out but signed with the Saints in January of 2018. The futures contract was terminated in September.
Elliot moved to the Allegiance of American Football in December of last year. He finished the shortened season with 7.5 sacks and four forced fumbles. With the Dolphins he will have a chance to compete at depleted defensive end unit.
The Dolphins are likely to add a defensive end early in this months draft but Elliot could show enough in camp to win a 53 man roster spot.
Miami is turning over every rock they can find as they rebuild the roster with younger players looking to make an impression. Contracts like these cost the Dolphins next to nothing but the payoff could be very good.
In 2008 the Dolphins worked out a defensive end from the B.C. Lions of the CFL. Cameron Wake turned out to be the best find in the entire Jeff Ireland era.
The approach that Miami is taking this off-season is smart. They are looking for football players that can be groomed and coached into their system without much monetary committment.
