Recapping the Miami Dolphins off-season is still mind blowing change
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins are sitting at pick 13 in next week NFL Draft and will continue their rebuild but looking back to only last month, it’s crazy how much changed.
Sometimes we don’t rehash an off-season until the following year and sometimes a year or two more down the road. The Miami Dolphins off-season this year is still a series of mind-blowing changes despite the fact we knew they were coming.
Teams undergo change every year but most of the time we don’t notice those changes because it is a high-priced veteran here or an underperfoming veteran. This year was a house cleaning and many of these players have not been replaced yet.
Ryan Tannehill – Traded to the Titans. Tannehill’s trade included the Dolphins eating some of his salary for the 2019 season. He has not been replaced long-term but the short term answer is Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Frank Gore – Left via free agency. The teams leading rusher never saw a chance to return. He has not been replaced on the roster.
Danny Amendola – Released. Amendola signed with the Lions and has not been replaced on the roster yet. He was the teams leading receiver last season.
Josh Sitton – released. Sitton played one game and part of another before hitting IR. He has not been replaced on the roster.
Ja’Wuan James – left via free agency. The Dolphins wanted to keep James but did not want to make him the highest paid RT in the league. Denver did. Miami is slated to use Jesse Davis in his spot but could draft his replacement.
Ted Larsen – left via free agency. Miami had no intentions on re-signing the aging veteran and have replaced his roster spot with a player from the defunct AAF.
Leonte Carroo – still a free agent. Miami opted not to re-sign the disappointing receiver and so far no one else has either.
If the offensive changes still impress you there were more on the defensive side of the ball.
Cameron Wake – left via free agency. The longtime Dolphins was no longer in the new regimes plan and signed with the Titans. He has not been replaced on the roster.
Robert Quinn – traded to Dallas. The Dolphins wanted to get rid of Quinn and his salary. They convinced the Cowboys to trade for him. But could only manage a 7th round draft pick in return. He has not been replaced on the roster.
Andre Branch – released. Branch carried a big salary cap hit and his production was off. The Dolphins had an out with his contract and took it. He is still a free agent and has not been replaced on the Dolphins roster.
William Hayes – still a free agent. Hayes is coming off an ACL tear but the Dolphins were not likely to re-sign him anyways. They allowed him to hit free agency and he is still a free agent. He has not been replaced on the roster although Miami did add an AAF player.
