The Miami Dolphins have been trying to accumulate more draft picks this off-season so it would not be surprising if they traded down in round one.

Over the course of the free agent period, the Miami Dolphins seemed to have focused on adding more draft picks. In fact it seems they added more picks in 2020 then free agents to their roster.

When the NFL Draft gets under way next Thursday the Dolphins will have plenty of time to watch it unfold in front of them. If the quarterbacks drop the Dolphins may be able to turn the 13th pick into more selections in both 2019 and 2020.

Identifying who the best trade partners would be is subjective but we can look at teams that may have the desire to move up should a player they like, whether quarterback or defensive player, drops.

Washington Redskins – The Redskins have reportedly said they are not in the market for a quarterback in this years first round but that could all be nothing more than smoke. Washington isn’t in position to draft one of the top three, if they covet one so trading up would make sense.

Washington could move up from 15 to 13 pretty easily and the cost wouldn’t be all that much but Miami would likely want a 2020 draft pick to go with any compensation they get in the 2019 draft.

Baltimore Ravens – The Ravens are believed to covet one of the top defensive players, specifically a pass rushing linebacker. Moving up from 22 would be more expensive than it would be for Washington but knowing that Miami may also be targeting the same type of player the Ravens could try to sway them to give up the 13th.

New York Giants – The Giants could draft a QB at six but if they pass and see one fall to 13 they could easily give up some draft picks to move up from 17 to take one.

Oakland Raiders – The Raiders have the 24th and 27th pick as well as the 4th overall pick. There are a lot of things they can do but if Jon Gruden wants to make a big splash and not wait to see who falls to them at 24 or 27 they very well may try to move back into the top 15. It would be costly but for the Dolphins it would bring in a lot more picks than any of the other scenarios.

Cleveland Browns – There is a lot of talk and speculation that the Browns want to not only get back into the first round after trading their first for Odell Beckham, Jr. but also possibly in the 10 to 20 range. If Miami traded with the Browns they would give up a first round pick but would recoup that pick in 2020 and they would receive a lot more on top of that.

Of course any trade is going to require a player at 13 that another team covets and with so many needs for the Dolphins any player could be a target for Miami and that could force teams to try to trade up ahead of Miami. Especially if a quarterback falls.
