2019 First-round mock draft with Miami Dolphins trade
13. Houston Texans (Trade via Miami) – Jonah Williams, OT, Alabama
HOU receives: First-round pick (13)
MIA receives: First-round pick (23), Second-round pick (54), 2020 Third-round pick
The Dolphins are one of the favorites to move down in this draft. Looking to add a quarterback in 2020, and needing to add help in various positions, it makes sense for them to add capital. Fortunately for them, they are in a good spot to move out of.
Teams behind them may not be looking to move up for a quarterback. There is a solid group of pass rushers in this class and a number of quality offensive linemen as well. A number of teams in the back half of the draft could look at Miami as a potential partner to make a move for a player at either position.
The Texans are a team that really needs to add some help on the offensive line to protect Deshaun Watson. Watson himself needs to do a better job of not holding on to the ball for so long, but adding a player like Jonah Williams could help solidify them in both passing and the run game.
By moving up, Houston gets to choose who they select rather than waiting to see who falls to them. For Miami, it’s simple as they pick up an additional second-rounder while also adding to their collection of 2020 picks.
14. Atlanta Falcons – Brian Burns, EDGE, Florida St.
The Falcons are very pleased with how the board has gone so far and that Brian Burns is available for them. Burns is one of the more exciting pass rushers to come out of this class. He sets the edge beautifully and should benefit from a ton of sacks in a pass-heavy division.
Atlanta could take an offensive lineman with their first pick as they really do need to bolster the line in front of Matt Ryan. However, their defensive front seven is more of a priority, especially if they want to try and slow down a dynamic offense like the New Orleans Saints.
15. Detroit Lions (via Washington) – T.J. Hockenson, TE, Iowa
The Lions really made out here by trading down with Washington. Detroit understands that most of their needs can be had later in the draft. Their primary needs are cornerback and tight end. Neither of those are top priorities for other teams at the top of the draft.
T.J. Hockenson is a player that has been mocked to the Lions quite a bit, and they are his best shot at becoming a top 10 selection. Detroit makes the smart move in sliding down, and they still get the player that they really like.
16. Carolina Panthers – Andre Dillard, OT, Washington St.
This move is all about getting Cam Newton some help. There are some concerns with Andre Dillard in regards to run blocking, but he is expected to become an elite pass blocker. If not, he could be out of the league in just a few years, but it’s a wise investment for the Panthers to take a chance on.
It remains uncertain as to whether Newton will be healthy or not for the season, but his body can only take so much. Carolina would be wise to snag a few linemen in this draft class, and starting with a player such as Dillard is a great start.
17. New York Giants – Daniel Jones, QB, Duke
Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports reports that there’s one team that has Daniel Jones as their number one QB in this class. In his tweet, Robinson went on to say that you know exactly which team that is.
It may all be a smokescreen, but it seems pretty clear that the Giants really do like Jones. The reality is that they are really the only ones so there’s no need for them to take him at six. Nor is it necessary for them to move up to take him.
Giants fans would probably be banging their heads against a table if they were to come out of day 1 with Gary and Jones, but that seems like a real possibility.
