The Miami Dolphins may have been targeting edge rusher Rashan Gary from Michigan but they may need to rethink this now after an injury report.

According to Ian Rapoport, Rashan Gary has a torn labrum which should cause a slide in his draft projections. The Dolphins should stay away from him in round one.

Earlier today I wrote a piece on why the Dolphins should look strongly at DT Jeffery Simmons despite his torn ACL that will keep him out of the 2019 season. When I say that Gary should be off the first round board for Miami, I’m not being hypocritical but he shouldn’t be a consideration at 13.

Gary is a good football player but he is not elite. Simmons has the potential to be elite after he recovers. He is a top 10 draft pick if healthy. Gary wasn’t a lock to be a top 15 before the news of the torn labrum.

Labrum’s are interesting injuries. They can heal just fine but they take time and can cause a lot of pain even after fully healed. The injury won’t keep him out of the 2019 season but if surgery is required, he could miss significant time. I’m not sure that playing through the injury in 2019 is a smart idea whether he played through it in college or not.

Some believe that Gary has some flags on the field with his play. He isn’t quick to the quarterback, at least not compared to others at his position. He benefits from a solid secondary at Michigan something he may not have consistently this year or next in Miami.

Gary is a borderline prospect for the Dolphins at 13. There are other prospects that could be better for the team and in no way should the Dolphins remove him entirely but they need to get a solid medical check on him before they make a move for him. If I’m drafting for the Dolphins however, I’m going to pass on him at 13 and if I’m draft a player that is injured, it’s Simmons for sure.

How Gary’s injury will affect his draft status and stock will be interesting but he is likely going to see his stock fall. How far it falls is another question.
