PhinPhanatic staff Miami Dolphins NFL mock draft

If I’m the Dolphins my first instinct is to trade down if I can find a viable partner. The way the board has fallen so far, I could see at least a couple of teams giving Miami a call in hopes to swing a deal. The Dolphins would benefit greatly by adding a couple of extra draft picks, particularly if any of them come from the 2020 NFL Draft.
Assuming Miami stands pat at 13, however, there are two players available that I see at the top of the board: Jawaan Taylor and Christian Wilkins. I don’t think the Dolphins could go wrong either way, but I lean towards Taylor with this selection. There’s no doubt that Miami needs to build both sides of the line. I think Taylor is the better value though as he could come out of this class as the best offensive tackle. In addition, I think adding Taylor is an upgrade over former Dolphins RT Ja’Wuan James, and obviously, at a much cheaper price.

If I’m the Dolphins, I’m not considering Drew Lock at 13. While there is upside to him, the Dolphins need, and I emphasize need, to rebuild these trenches on both sides of the ball. To me, that leaves three people: Montez Sweat, Christian Wilkins and Jawaan Taylor. Whatever route, you get a highly talented player, but personally, and I feel like Grier and others, will love Christian Wilkins. While Sweat shined in college and especially in the combine, the heart issues bring up a red flag that vaguely reminds me of a Maurice Hurst situation from last year, though I doubt he falls past the first round. Plus, edge rushers can be found in mid rounds. Also, while Taylor is one of the nastiest finishers in the draft, this class is sneakily deep in offensive lineman that the Dolphins can take advantage of in later rounds. Wilkins just seems like a player than can flourish in Brian Flores new system with his unlimited talent, especially by his size and ability to clog up the middle. Plus his character is one of his best traits, and seems like a person to root for.

So if the Miami Dolphins are sitting and watching the only two Qb’s worth snatching at 13 go by (Those of course are Lock and Haskins) assuming #1 went down like everyone is predicting, The Dolphins must take a havoc creating D lineman, and that guy needs to be Dexter Lawrence. He very young but had proven last season he is a man beast. Of course I’m in that group who says go in after Rosen if trade is available. If a huge offer comes in to trade down then add the picks, but it would have to wow me.

Despite Dwayne Haskins being there at 13, I would not pull the trigger. I believe the better plan is to build the trenches, OL and DL, and wait to draft a potential franchise QB until next year. Therefore, my pick would be OT Jawaan Taylor out of Florida. He’s viewed by many as a top 10 pick and if he falls to 13 I think it would be hard to pass him up.

This could go a lot of different ways and I do think Miami will try to trade down. I think Christian Wilkins makes the most sense and if I am the Dolphins I am turning his name in on the draft card. A big quick footed defensive lineman that can shoot the gaps and take on blockers, Wilkins could become the best DT since Tim Bowens. I love everything about him.
There has been some speculation however that Miami could go with a corner and that would make some sense but I would rather have Wilkins than another dime guy. For me Byron Murphy makes a lot of sense for the Dolphins but again, I can’t pass up Wilkins. But I don’t make the picks for Miami so I will go with a corner in this spot and the Dolphins will take Murphy.
