Miami Dolphins Christian Wilkins will be a defensive leader
By Brian Miller
There are a lot of things to like about new Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Christian Wilkins but his personality may be what leads the locker room.
When fans think of Christian Wilkins they picture a big bruising defensive tackle that comes from a powerhouse college, Clemson. They see a guy who can stuff the run and who is quick enough to get to the quarterback. They may not see a leader but this guy has the potential to become one.
At Clemson, the two degree standout, was a leader on the field and in the locker room. He has a personality that is infectious and already his character is winning over fans and media alike.
When he was drafted, Wilkins made a big first impression jumping up to shoulder bump NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. It was a great sight that had everyone in the NFL talking. Wilkins is a fun-loving go easy individual off the field and he will most certainly have his teammates in his corner.
His personality is easy to see. He jokes and has fun. He is loud but not obnoxious. He loves the game of football and loves the camaraderie of the locker room. No one has ever said a negative thing about him.
His introductory press conference was lighthearted and he made it a point to say he was there to win and to become part of the culture. When asked about reuniting with his former defensive line coach Marion Hobby, Wilkins said he was not looking forward to that then said he was teasing. He credited Hobby with a lot of his development.
When Wilkins talked to Chris Grier he told him that it would be the best decision he ever made. He explained to the media.
"“Because just of what I can do for the culture and for the organization. They’re not just getting a guy on the field who is going to do his best as a player and be disruptive and do the things I need to do on the field, but I’m the kind of guy you want in your organization just to make it a better place, to be playing winning football and play at the highest level. I’m determined to do that. I’m so excited and so fortunate just to be a part of this organization.” via MiamiDolphins.com"
He would also later say that he was surprised the Dolphins took him because “Marion Hobby didn’t like me too much at Clemson”. Another joke he made but it paints a picture that Wilkins is indeed a big personality that will win over his doubters and his teammates.
And yes, he could very well change the culture that has been the Miami Dolphins.
