Looking back at Miami Dolphins history of Josh Rosen’s number 3
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins have added a new quarterback via trade in last weeks draft and Josh Rosen will likely wear his familiar number three.
There has not been many players in Miami Dolphins history to wear the number three on their uniform. In fact, Rosen will be only the eight player in Miami Dolphins history to wear the number. And he doesn’t have to do much to become the best player to don it.
From 1981-1982 punter Tom Orosz wore the number three for the very first time in team history oddly enough. In 1987 Stacy Gore wore the number and later that same year Van Tiffin was handed the number.
Gore was added to the Dolphins roster during the 1987 season when the league played a portion of the season with replacement players. Once the labor issue was over, Gore was replaced by Tiffin. Gore didn’t play in the NFL again as was the case for most of the replacement players. Van Tiffin spent one year in the NFL sharing time between the Dolphins and the Buccaneers. He is the son of the Tiffin Motorhomes founder.
In 2002, Mark Royals, joined the Dolphins through the 2003 season. For the next several years the number remained unused until the Dolphins added QB Joey Harrington to the roster. Harrington lasted only one season, 2006, in Miami. A year later kicker Jay Feely wore the number.
From 2007 to 2015 the number remained unused until kicker Andrew Franks wore the number until 2016. Only one Miami Dolphins player in history has worn number three as a quarterback, Harrington.
Four times the number was worn by a place kicker, two times by a punter, and one time by a quarterback. That should change when Rosen takes the field in 2019 and as we said earlier, he doesn’t have to do much to be the best player to have worn it.
