The Miami Dolphins did pretty good in the NFL Draft last week and apparently they did pretty good with the undrafted rookie class as well.

According to ProFootballFocus, the Miami Dolphins landed two of the top undrafted free agents in their top ten list. Not a bad haul for a team rebuilding and needing youth.

Deion Calhoun is a much-needed depth filler for the offensive line and a year or two down the road after some practice squad time he could be ready to take the next step. Of course given the Dolphins situation at guard, he may get a legit shot to make the roster in 2019. It wouldn’t be unfathomable.

Calhoun had a great career at Mississippi State as a three-year starter. While he is strong at the point of attack he needs to work on moving his body when pressure is in his face. He doesn’t project to be much of a pulling guard but that can be coached.

The other top 10 UDFA according to PFF was WR Preston Williams. Williams is a boom or bust type of player and while it is exciting to see a talent that should have been a day two draft pick land on the roster after failing to get drafted, there are reasons.

In 2017 Williams was arrested for domestic violence. There are serious concerns about his committment to football as he tends to be kind of lax in his prep. However, when he has his mind right, he can be a top talent at the position. Our friend Luis Sung over at PhinManiacs.com called him a potential steal.

UDFA’s are often long shots to make NFL rosters but it is not unheard of. Given the Dolphins youth movement, it seems all of the players on the bottom of the roster will be competing for spots on the final 53 and practice squad.
