Miami Dolphins in talks with edge rusher Nick Perry
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins are starting their second wave of free agency with discussion for edge rusher Nick Perry according to a report.
Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald is reporting that the Miami Dolphins are in talks with former Green Bay Packer Nick Perry.
Drafted 28th overall in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, Nick Perry has spent his entire NFL career with the Green Bay Packers but now the street free agent may be joining a Dolphins roster that is anemic on the outside.
An outside linebacker who rushes from the edge, Perry has spent much of his career injured with nagging injuries. Over his career he has yet to play an entire season. He has started 48 of 81 games played missing around 112 games in that time.
When he is healthy, Perry is a decent OLB who has 32 sacks over his career. He has 228 tackles 149 of which were solo and 46 QB hits according to his Pro-Football Reference profile. You can click on his name to see his full stats from PFR.
Last season Perry spent time with new Dolphins DC Patrick Graham so the natural connection makes him a fit for what the Dolphins are transitioning to. While injuries have been a problem, in Miami he would be part of a rotation and not a player expected to play large amounts of snaps. He will also likely come relatively cheap, or at least he should.
If the Dolphins offer him a contract it will be interesting to see that amount given the Dolphins desire early in free agency to purge high salaries for aging veterans. Perry is till young, only 29 years of age but the injury history is a concern.
The Dolphins are depleted with the trade of Robert Quinn and Cameron Wake leaving in free agency.
