With Chandler Cox the new FB in Miami, who was the best ever?
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins are going to be running some old school offense if they stick with fullback Chandler Cox on the final 53.
When the Miami Dolphins made Chandler Cox a 7th round draft pick this year it became clear that the Dolphins are wanting to build a power running game to balance the passing game.
Fullback is a bruising position of the past where running lanes were opened and then plowed through by a big bruising runner without the football. Many younger fans don’t even remember the Dolphins using one. The last one seems so long ago.
There haven’t been many fullbacks on the Dolphins roster over the years. The last notable FB was Lousaka Polite who played from 2008 – 2010. Polite was a fan favorite who was known for his 3rd and 4th down short yardage pick-ups. For many fans that is the only FB that stands out but there were others who were a lot better.
Norm Bulaich and Don Nottingham were staples to the Dolphins rushing corp in the early 70’s but even they couldn’t hold the candle to Larry Csonka. Yes that bruising runner who is in the Hall of Fame was a fullback. And a damn good one obviously.
In 1980’s Don Shula had players like Keith Byars and Andra Franklin but the Dolphins were never really a running team once Dan Marino showed up. In the mid-2000’s Rob Konrad held the position down and did a really solid job.
Even Charles Clay played a TE/FB hybrid while with the Dolphins under Tony Sparano. Overall the Dolphins have had some very good fullbacks over the decades and a few that are forgettable. How the Dolphins use Chandler Cox will go a long way to establishing the type of offense that Chad O’Shea wants to run.
To answer the question though, Larry Csonka is the absolute best FB in Dolphins history and probably the NFL.
