Vern Den Herder

Most modern era Miami Dolphins fans might not recognize the name Vern Den Herder. He wasn’t a player that blew up the stat categories because back when he played they didn’t register tackles and sacks. He was a quiet man on three Super Bowl teams for the Dolphins and his career in Miami lasted 12 seasons.

Den Herder started no games in 1971, his rookie season, but he started every game but two that he played in for the rest of his career. 144 of 166. The 6’6″ defensive end was a disruptive physical force on the outside.

While the NFL did not track sacks, the Miami Dolphins have Den Herder listed number five on their all-time sack list. He posted 65 sacks over his career. To put this in perspective, Doug Betters who had 65.5 sacks is on the Honor Roll as is Bill Stanfill and Jason Taylor.

Vern Den Herder also sports a share of the team’s record for sacks in one game with five. His inclusion into the Honor Roll should come sooner rather than later or at least is deserving.
