The Miami Dolphins made a big splash when they signed undrafted receiver Preston Williams after the draft. Now Xavien Howard believes he has the “it” factor.

Speaking the media following today’s Miami Dolphins practice, Xavien Howard told those in attendance that Preston Williams has the “it” factor and could be a number one receiver.

That is a pretty big endorsement from the Dolphin’s best secondary player. Howard has seen a lot of great receivers so the unsolicited response is a good indication of where Williams is trending. The Dolphins would benefit greatly from Williams making a big impact in his rookie season.

Of course, the question is where does Williams fit into the group of receivers and can he make the roster? That is a big question because Dolphins fans know that great camps don’t always lead to roster spots. Chris Hogan immediately comes to mind.

Miami is stacked at receiver with DeVante Parker and Kenny Stills on the outside, Jakeem Grant, Allen Hurns, and Albert Wilson in the mix inside. Add to that group Isaiah Ford and Preston Williams faces a big challenge. He can’t simply be good, he has to show enough to be considered a great prospect.

Through the off-season, Williams turned a lot of heads and it appears that he is maintaining that through training camp when most players, especially undrafted ones, even out and find it difficult to make strides.

The fact that Williams is catching the eye of Howard is a good sign that he is continuing to trend northward. Now he has to show the day to day consistency and then the pre-season game consistency to give Chad O’Shea a reason not to let him go. If he is, he likely won’t pass through waivers to land on the team’s practice squad.
