Hall of Fame QB Steve Young takes big shots at Miami Dolphins tanking
By Brian Miller
On Monday Night Football’s pregame show, Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young took issue with the Miami Dolphins and their record.
Animated to some degree, Steve Young said what the Miami Dolphins are doing is putting players’ health at risk. It’s not an original thought, as earlier this season, Mike Greenberg said the same thing. He was wrong and frankly Steve Young is ignorant.
The Miami Dolphins are not “tanking” they are rebuilding. No one seems to care that teams like the Broncos may dismantle their team by the trade deadline. In fact, many think the Broncos should do exactly that. They are not the only team.
The Redskins have one win and the Bengals have none. Most in the media believe that both teams should start selling off players to rebuild the roster infrastructure. In Miami, it’s called tanking. This despite the fact that Miami has almost won their last two games.
The Dolphins are not very good this year and fans have accepted that. The NFL mouthers have not. That’s o.k. Their opinion really doesn’t matter especially a hack like Young.
Young’s HOF career was achieved on the heels of a team built by head coach Bill Walsh that was made successful by Joe Montana. Young simply stepped in and took over a team that was already built to win and all he had to do was not screw it up. He did that much.
Now his gold jacket gives him a reason to run his mouth on television. His opinion on the Dolphins, however, is flawed. The Dolphins have not suffered many injuries this year. They have six players on IR and none of them are starters or even second-team back-ups, but yes, the Dolphins have put the health of their players at risk.
The Dolphins are not winning over many fans but it is getting old saying that the Dolphins are deliberately trying to lose football games. It is unfair to the players and to the coaches as well as the fans.
NOTE: As I get ready to hit the publish button, Dolphins Xavien Howard intercepts Steelers QB and a few plays later, the Miami Dolphins lead the Steeler’s 7-0. Tanking indeed.
