Post Senior Bowl entire first round 2020 NFL mock draft
Pick #5 Miami Dolphins: Andrew Thomas, T, Georgia
With the three players that best fit Miami’s needs already off the board, if a good trade offer comes in, the Dolphins should take it. Since no trades are allowed, this pick was an extremely difficult decision.
QB Tua Tagovailoa is the consensus pick but his medical questions make him a risky pick at #5. Tackle Mekhi Becton was also considered but I am leery of “late draft risers”.
In the end, Thomas is the safest pick for this slot. He’s a better pass blocker than run blocker but did help his teammate RB D’Andre Swift reach 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons.
Pick #6 Los Angeles Chargers: Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon
Is this the year that the Chargers draft QB Phillip Rivers’ replacement? Smart money says that it is and Herbert is their top choice. He does possess some accuracy issues but the team loves the size and arm strength that Herbert provides.
Pick #7 Carolina Panthers: Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn
With much of their line scheduled to become free agents in March, the Panthers need some help along the defensive line. With a strong Senior Bowl, fellow DT Javon Kinlaw will also get consideration but questions about his ‘motor’ will make Brown the Panthers pick here.
Brown’s production doesn’t always show up on paper but if you watched him play, there is no denying that he reeks havoc along the offensive line.
Pick #8 Arizona Cardinals: Jedrick Willis, T, Alabama
Even with an athletic quarterback, the Cardinals still allowed 50 sacks in 2019; tied for 5th most in the league.
While Willis isn’t as athletically gifted as his teammate Alex Leatherwood (who decided to return for his senior year at Alabama), he was an excellent pass protector at right tackle.
At worst, Willis is a perennial starter on the right side but if he can make the love to left tackle, the Cardinals may have gotten a steal with this pick.
Pick #9 Jacksonville Jaguars: Javon Kinlaw, DT, South Carolina
Remember those questions about Kinlaw’s ‘motor’ that I mentioned earlier? Defensive Assistant Dom Capers will fix that, one way or another.
When he’s motivated, nobody was more explosive at the defensive tackle position this season than Kinlaw and that extended all the way into Senior Bowl practices.
With last year’s top pick Josh Allen attracting alot of attention, expect Kinlaw to spend alot of time in the backfield during the 2020 season.
Pick #10 Cleveland Browns: Mekhi Becton, T, Louisville
The Browns got substandard play from their left tackle last year which led to them finishing with the 22nd ranked offense in the league. Becton is ‘wow-ing’ scouts with his combination of size and athleticism.
There are concerns about his mobility due to his 369 pound frame but there is a clear drop-off at left tackle after Becton so Cleveland will work on his weight during the offseason.
