The Justin Herbert Option

The idea of Justin Herbert somehow becoming the first-overall draft pick this year is absurd but it isn’t entirely out of the question either. Head coach Zac Taylor is familiar with the QB and many believe that Herbert is more of a fit in Taylor’s offensive system.

It would be one of the all-time draft shocks to hear Herbert’s name over Burrow’s at the top of the draft but odd things happen every year and teams tend to draft players that they believe will help their franchises, not who the mainstream media believe.

Some believe that the Bengals are interested in Burrow to simply drum up a trade for the top spot but what if they genuinely want Herbert over Burrow and can’t work out a trade? Would the Bengals take Burrow simply because he is deemed the top QB or would they draft the guy that they want?

My guess is they would draft the guy they wanted first and foremost but there is a caveat, they could do a similar trade that was done by the Chargers and Giants when Eli Manning refused to sign with the Chargers who drafted him and was traded to the Giants for Philip Rivers.

In this case, could they draft Burrow and trade him to Miami when they were on the clock at five? Would they trade with the Dolphins for less than the value in the hopes to take Herbert later? Probably not as that would be too risky.

There are two scenarios here with Herbert and both are predicated on the Bengals actually wanting him. Draft him one overall or work a trade that puts them in the third draft spot which would involve the Dolphins moving up to three in the scenario. They can’t want Herbert and not expect the Chargers to jump ahead of them.
