Right Tackle

Josh Jones, Houston

Lucas Niang, TCU

Ben Bartch, St. John’s (MN)

Jones is a three-year starter at Houston and the best tackle left on the board after day one.  He’s the most ‘trustworthy’ of these three tackles in the run game and protecting Tua’s blindside but has missed games due to injury in two of his three seasons at Houston so durability is a concern.  Prediction:  Early round 2

If the Dolphins are looking for the player from this trio with experience playing right tackle, then Niang is their man.  If his hip passes the team’s medical checks, Niang can be a physical force blocking for the run.  Prediction:  Late 2nd/Early 3rd

Bartch is a ‘wildcard’ in this discussion.  From a little-known division 3 college, Bartch brought his tools to the Senior Bowl and showed everyone that he can hang with the ‘big boys’.  A converted tight end, Bartch only has two years experience at tackle.  It will probably take some time, and a lot of coaching, but Bartch has the highest ceiling of any tackle left on the board.  Prediction:  Round 3

Center

Lloyd Cushenberry III, LSU

Matt Hennessy, Temple

Coming into the draft there were only two ‘Grade A’ centers in Cesar Ruiz and Cushenberry.  Ruiz went off the board late in round one so Cushenberry should be an early Dolphins target if they truly want to upgrade the position.

Cushenberry is a strong, intelligent player who works best in a scheme that doesn’t emphasize a lot of movement but he has experience in a spread offense similar to what OC Chan Gailey is known to run.  Prediction:  Early round 2

Hennessey is pretty much the exact opposite of Cushenberry.  He wins on ‘grit’ and movement skills but isn’t athletically gifted by NFL standards.  He can compete with Karras at center but will probably be a backup in year one.   Prediction:  Late round 3
