Gone are the days where Reshad Jones‘s name was cemented as the teams starting strong safety. The 2020 Miami Dolphins will need to find his replacement. During 2019 the club moved long time corner, Eric Rowe, into that role. He was playing mostly coverage on opposing tight ends. When opposing tight ends moved around, so did Rowe. Interestingly enough, the team still lists Eric Rowe as a corner. I expect him to remain in that role given his new contract, but exciting newcomers might give this veteran and unexpected battle in camp.

Before I start to talk about this battle, first, I want to go over how Miami used the safety position during the 2019 campaign. They do everything. Outside corners, slot corners, deep, almost every linebacker position. If you have a guy on defense that the offense has no idea where he will be each snap, that makes coordinators unsure how to attack them, so knowing that let us speculate who will get fighting for snaps.

Kavon Frazier. This 2016 6th round selection by the Dallas Cowboys has mostly been a reserve player. At 6’ 220 LBS, this thumper was placed on injured reserve after only appearing in 3 games last season. His 18 total snaps do not allow for an excellent projection into what we can expect in 2020, But he did great out well. So not a negative. His 18 snaps were six rush defense snaps and 12 coverage snaps. Logging 4 tackle with two stops and one target for one reception for only 4 yards. He graded out 74.9 overall with 72.4 rush defense-grade and 66.6 coverage grade on PFF. I expect this to be a player on the rise. With his physical traits and Brian Flores coaching, we could see a much different Kavon Frazier in 2020.

My bold prediction for this competition is Kamu Grugier-Hill getting a look. During the 2020 NFL offseason, Miami signed linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill from the Eagles. On the surface, the signing seemed like special teams and depth move. But after doing some research, this speedy linebacker has been playing all over the field for the Eagles. Getting reps at the corner, safety, and all linebacker positions, he fits what Coach Flores likes to do with his safeties. Also, on twitter, he posted a video of him doing defensive back drills that fueled my speculation.

This competition may not end up as a one-man leading the way, but maybe the answer is they split the snaps three ways, either way. This position battle will be fun to watch.
