3rd down defense

Is there anything more disturbing than to see the Dolphins defense stop an offensive drive and force a 3rd and long and knowing in your mind that the defense will give up the first? It happens far more than anyone would like to see.

Over the past 20 years, the Dolphins have struggled defensively with 3rd downs and seem to do better with 3rd and short-yardage situations. This isn’t scientific but instead the eyeball test. I’m not going to get into semantics over statistics. The reality is that very few fans are confident in Miami’s ability to get off the field when in these situations and that is because there is a history of not being able to get off the field in these situations.

Miami has to do better in this and that falls on the coaches because apparently, talent isn’t the issue as much as the playcalling and scheme. Maybe it has to do with the fact that Miami consistently doesn’t press receivers at the line but instead give them a large cushion, which they use to pick up 5 to 10 yards pretty consistently.
