16.  Carolina Panthers (2-2)

I would like to say that the loss of running back Christian McCaffrey hurt the Panthers’ start but they lost the two games he played and have won the last two without him.  The real difference is that Carolina’s defense has given up over 30 points in both their defeats and 21 or less in their victories.

Preseason ranking:  27

17.  Arizona Cardinals (2-2)

The Cardinals were a “trendy” team to make a push for the playoffs in 2020.  QB Kyler Murray continues to make plays with his legs but may actually be regressing as a passer this season.  Meanwhile, there’s an NFL “APB” out for Kenyan Drake who’s averaging 63.5 yards per game and 3.8 yards-per-carry.

Preseason ranking:  18

18.  San Francisco 49ers (2-2)

The defending NFC Champions are off to a horrible start this season.  They haven’t won a game outside of MetLife Stadium (having beaten the Jets and Giants).  Obviously the team has had a ton of injuries but, frankly, they weren’t playing that well from the beginning.

As for their upcoming schedule, after visiting the 1-3 Miami Dolphins, San Francisco’s next seven opponents currently have a 23-6 record.

Preseason ranking:  3

19.  Los Angeles Chargers (1-3)

For those people that thought QB Phillip Rivers was the reason Los Angeles couldn’t finish out games, I present to you the 2020 Chargers with Justin Herbert.  The Chargers led the mighty Chiefs with under two minutes remaining before surrendering a game-tying field as time expired; then losing in overtime.  Two weeks later, they blow a 17-point lead in the final 31:37 against the Tampa Bay Bucs; getting outscored 31-7.  It could be argued that, once again, the Chargers are the best ‘worst team in the NFL’.

Preseason ranking:  26

20.  Denver Broncos (1-3)

The Broncos started the year with three straight losses but, then again, the combined record of those teams currently stands at 9-1.  It also needs to be taken into account that, thru 4 games, Denver is already on their third quarterback.  The team still has time to potentially turn around their season but two of their next three games are against New England and Kansas City so the Broncos better step it up quickly.

Preseason ranking:  11
