Matt Breida will be a free agent after this season and the Miami Dolphins are in no hurry to re-sign him.

Matt Breida – RB

During last April’s draft, the Dolphins traded a 5th round pick to the 49’ers for the explosive and speedy running back but so far this year, the Dolphins haven’t really called his number all that often and when talk during training camp centered on an extension, the Dolphins shot it down saying they would take a wait and see approach.

Through nine games, the Dolphins really haven’t seen much to make them pick up the phone and call his agent. In part, that is due to Chan Gailey’s play calling. With Myles Gaskin out with an injury, Breida has an opportunity for a bigger role but he missed last Sunday with a hamstring injury and that won’t slot him into a premium upgrade if he is off the field.

Breida has great speed but if he can’t get on the field for whatever reason, he doesn’t have that kind of value for the team. Miami may start negotiating later this year but it widely speculated that Miami will target a top running back in the draft this year and that would likely nix a deal to extend Breida.

As for Breida himself, he may be better off looking at the market to see where his value might be.
