4. Jakeem Grant
Week 9 stats: 5 targets, 4 receptions, 35 yards
Grant’s stat line may not stand out, but similar to Breida, his role should increase with Preston Williams being placed on injured reserve after a foot injury took him out of the Cardinals game.
It seems as though Grant is already getting set to take on a starting role, according to ESPN beat writer Cameron Wolfe.
Grant, who is the only player in the NFL this season with a punt return for a touchdown, looked fairly good at wideout and showed why he is still on the roster. The assumption is he will continue to play more in the slot and be a reliable target for Tagovailoa.
Besides being in the slot, Grant’s speed also allows him to blow the top off defenses. With Williams out, Parker should garner more attention for defenses, so the expectation is that guys like Grant, Adam Shahenn, Mack Hollins, and Durham Smythe see an increase in looks and action.
The Chargers have been a team that has given up as many big plays as they’ve blown leads. Grant should see his best production of the season this upcoming week and if he doesn’t then Chan Gailey needs to be asked why.
