Ehlinger would be the ideal backup quarterback for the Miami Dolphins

Round 6 Pick 183

Texas QB Sam Ehlinger

The Dolphins should take a quarterback this year, just not with the third overall pick. Ehlinger would be a solid draft pick that could push Tagovailoa in his second season.

With that being said, it doesn’t mean that I think he could take Tagovailoa’s starting job, but he could push him into being a better quarterback and could come in incase the starter gets hurt.

At Texas, Ehlinger was a gunslinger that could move around the field quite easily and beat you with his legs if needed. He was not as great as many thought he would be coming into the season, but he was good.

He threw for 26 touchdowns compared to 5 interceptions and opened the season with a 426 yard passing game against UTEP. Sadly, he never surpassed 300 yards passing in any other game on the season, which accumulated to a 2,566 yard passing season. Whether it be on the COVID pandemic affecting the season, or the poor Texas coaching staff remains the questions.

The Dolphins should target Ehlinger as Tagovailoa’s future back up, with the team more than likely bringing back Ryan Fitzpatrick for one more season.

Ehlinger could be the next Kirk Cousins in terms of talent, and if Tagovailoa does fail, this could be the answer. Hopefully Tagovailoa is able to figure it out for the Phins.
