Miami Dolphins: 5 bold free agency predictions for Miami
By Jeremy Klump
3. The Miami Dolphins WILL sign two starting defenders to 1-year COVID-19 cap deals
I have been guilty of really focusing on the offense this offseason because there are so many layers to what can happen. The offense is what needs to improve for Miami, as their defense was one of the best units in the NFL.
However, Miami should make sure they keep improving their defense, and I expect them to do so in free agency as well as the draft.
This one is a little vaguer, mainly because I think Miami will be strategic in who they sign for their defense. My bold prediction is that they sign two starters or at least two players that play significant snaps for them in 2021. I think they will sign both of those players to 1-year COVID-19 cap deals.
I think the 1-year COVID-19 cap deals will be huge this offseason, and Miami will get in on the fun. I mean that some free agents may have to take a 1-year contract and then bet on themselves to secure a more significant deal once the cap goes back up. COVID-19 took the cap down a ton, so I don’t see many players taking long-term, team friendlier deals to help with it.
Some names to throw out there would be Shaquil Barrett, Bud Dupree, Jadeveon Clowney, Keanu Neal, Carl Lawson, Matt Judon, Yannick Ngakoue, Romeo Okwara, Jaylon Brown, Xavier Woods, Desmond King, Takkarist McKinley, Malik Hooker, and Trey Hendrickson.
Adding any two of these guys or anyone I forgot to a 1-year deal would be ideal.
