There was a lot of speculation that the Miami Dolphins would trade for Deshaun Watson but their guy is clearly Tua Tagovailoa. For now.

Media and fans alike can point to the increasing legal issues of Deshaun Watson as a reason why a trade didn’t happen but I would venture a guess that the compensation Houston would want was also a factor and I would also venture a guess that Tua Tagovailoa is a reason as well.

With Watson out of the picture, media and some fans turned to the draft and Miami’s third overall pick as a possible spot for the Dolphins to replace Tua with Justin Fields or another QB. But…the Dolphins traded that pick on Friday and that clearly shows they are not sold on a single player in this draft, yet.

Now back to Tua. The Dolphins are all-in on Tua and they will probably run with him all season next year. Despite the fact they traded one of the two first-round picks in 2022 to move up, the Dolphins are still in a good position with a lot of draft capital to move around next year or the following should they find that Tua is not the answer.

The Dolphins are forward-thinking. They will add weapons on offense and stiffen the defense this year and roll with Tua for the 2021 season giving him every chance to show what he can do or what he can’t do. If Tua improves, and my guess is that he will in a big way, the Dolphins have three first-round picks in the next two drafts following this one, and will probably shuffle around some more to add more draft capital down the road. If not, they move those picks to move around the draft board to get Tua’s replacement.

Either way, the Dolphins are in good shape for the next three drafts beginning in April and they are in a good position to build upon the roster, or if need be, to replace their franchise QB. I don’t think they will need to.
