No. 2: Patrick Surtain II, CB, Alabama

Before we get into the player, I understand how cool it would be for the Miami Dolphins to select Patrick Surtain II in the 2021 NFL Draft. His father, Patrick Surtain Sr., was selected by the Dolphins in the 2nd round, pick 44 in the 1998 NFL Draft. The storylines for that would be endless, and it would be really cool for all involved, even the Dolphins.

However, not with the sixth overall pick, especially with the holes Miami has on their roster. I would say that cornerback is Miami’s best position on their roster, and I do not think many people would argue with me if any at all. Miami has two elite cornerbacks in Xavien Howard and Byron Jones. They also drafted Noah Igbinoghene in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, so the need at cornerback isn’t there.

I think Surtain is the No. 1 cornerback in the draft. Even though my No. 1 player in the 2021 NFL Draft, former Florida Gators tight end Kyle Pitts took him to school a little, I still think Surtain is fantastic. He dominated his Pro Day, too, showing that he is elite on the field, and he is also an elite athlete.

Even knowing all of this, Miami should not be thinking about taking him with the sixth overall pick. Miami could trade Howard if they felt that it was time, but I would stick with him after his 10 interception season.

If Surtain is there at pick 18, we can have that conversation, but he should not even be an option for Miami at pick 6.
