Breaking: Miami Dolphins trade Ereck Flowers to Washington
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins have a pre-draft trade completed that will send guard Ereck Flowers to Washington for a swap of late draft picks. The question is what does this mean for the Dolphins?
Miami needed to clear some cap space and this will help. Miami will save $8 million in cap space with the trade and eat only $2 million in dead money. Flowers played well last year for the Dolphins and played in Washington the year before that. Is this a sign of bigger things?
Miami is currently sitting at pick number six and now with a hole at guard, the Dolphins could be in a position to draft offensive tackle and shift Robert Hunt inside. Miami could be targeting Penei Sewell or Rashawn Slater.
The Dolphins signed D.J. Fluker earlier this month and that could be Miami’s immediate answer and this trade could be nothing more than what was planned all along when they signed Fluker.
This move is not surprising as many have thought that Flowers could be on the block at some point but this does create a big hole that Miami will need to fill this weekend. Miami has two first-round picks and two second-round picks to start the draft.
The Dolphins will have a better cap situation to sign their draft class but more moves are likely going to be made. The Dolphins are stacked at WR and that is a position that many believe the Dolphins will target early on Thursday night.
Miami signed Flowers last year in free agency after Flowers chose a better deal from Miami over Washington who tried to keep him. Flowers was originally a first-round pick of the Giants as a tackle. He was moved to guard when he arrived in Washington and played much better.
Josina Anderson spoke with Flowers a short while ago regarding the trade and Flowers seems to be happy with the move. “I’m very excited & anxious to get back up there because I love the O-line room & I already had a good relationship with coach John Matsko as well. This is best for me.”
