Miami Dolphins fans are wondering why the Miami Dolphins drafted Boston College tight end, Hunter Long, at 81 in round 3.

The Dolphins could have drafted center Quinn Meinerz which would have filled a big need. They could have added depth at linebacker with Jabril Cox, instead, they drafted a tight end. A tight end that gives Miami six players in the room at that position.

While Long has some quality tangibles to offer with his routes and ability to get off defenders, he also has a few things he needs to work on including his aggressiveness. He needs to be better in his determination.

Miami has some decisions to make at the position and frankly, I think we will see Durham Smythe off the roster by the end of camp. Miami has five year pro Cethan Carter on the roster, he was added in free agency, Mike Gesicki of course, and Adam Shaheen who got a small extension last year.

Miami will likely carry three or four TE’s this year on the roster. Gesicki, Carter, and Shaheen seem to make sense and now a 3rd round Long. That leaves Smythe and Myarick likley out in Miami.

Long has a lot of upside but Miami had needs at other positions and drafting a tight end didn’t make a lot of sense considering that they won’t pick again until round five and then again in round seven.

With all the needs they had, tight end didn’t seem to be one of them. Is this a bad pick? Not at all it is just not something fans would have thought Miami needed to make. On social media, fans are asking that question.
