After Allen Hurns and Albert Wilson opted out of the 2020 season, the Miami Dolphins gave away one of their numbers. This year they both have new numbers.

In 2019, Albert Wilson wore number 15 and Allen Hurns wore number 17. We discussed who is wearing 17 here and Wilson will now shift to the number 2 and Hurns will wear number 8.

There are no guarantees that one or both make this year’s final roster. The Dolphins are deep with talent at the position. Miami will likely carry no more than six receivers on the final 53 and that makes for a tight race for the final spot.

Rookie Jaelan Phillips will now wear number 15 which was worn in 2018 and 2019 by Wilson. Wilson will now wear 2 as stated above.

Number 2: Wilson will become the first Dolphins WR to wear the number two jersey. In the past, Brandon Fields and Matt Haack were the best to wear it as punters. Two others in history have worn number 2.

Number 8: With Hurns now donning number 8, we can look back through the past to see if anyone is in his way for the best player to wear it. Daunte Culpepper surely didn’t in his short stint with Miami but Matt Moore did pretty well for the Dolphins in his few years. Brock Osweiler wore it for a single season as well but I think it is safe to say that Moore has worn it better. Hurns of course has to make the roster to change that.

Number 15: 15 now belongs to a defensive end thanks to changing NFL rules that allow players to wear different numbers than traditionally issued for each position. It will be odd seeing 15 line up on the outside of defense rather than an offense.

Earl Morral stands out as one of the best to wear 15 and Davone Bess didn’t do so bad with it either. In all, 13 players have worn 15 but Phillips has a shot to make it his own if he can stay healthy and avoid the concussions that plagued him at UCLA.
