The Miami Dolphins would be smart to extend Mike Gesicki now rather than wait until next year.

Mike Gesicki is one of the most sure-handed tight ends in Dolphins history. He may not measure up statistically to other tight ends on the Dolphins’ all-time roster but that is more the fault of the coaching staff and how they use him and the changing flow of quarterbacks. Gesicki is an excellent route runner with a good eye for the ball in the air.

2021 is the final year of Gesicki’s contract and that means he heads to free agency in 2022. The Dolphins could view this in two ways. They could see him replaceable but Hunter Long who was drafted this past April, or they could view him as a potential compensation draft pick in 2022’s draft. Both are not good ideas.

Signing Gesicki to an extension this year will give Miami a potential dual threat at the position and they can easily take on the $10 million a year contract he will likely sign with bonus money spread out over the contract. Keeping Gesicki on the roster also shows that the Dolphins are indeed trying to keep players they draft and develop in order to build this roster.

If there is one thing working against him, it is the fact that Gesicki was not drafted by the Chris Grier/Brian Flores team. He was part of the Adam Gase/Mike Tannenbaum/Chris Grier trio and that may not work in his favor.
