Miami Dolphins: 4 players that should be extended before training camp
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins got solid production from Emmanuel Ogbah in 2020 and should retain him.
Emmanuel Ogbah is a prime candidate to extend, even if on a short two-year extension. He is scheduled to count $7.5 million against the cap this year. Miami could release him and save the entire amount by why would they want to?
Ogbah was the best pass-rusher off the edge last year and now he will see rookie Jaelan Phillips on the opposite side. That could lead to a better statistical season in 2021 which would lead to more money on a contract extension in 2022.
If the Dolphins wanted to create some extra space in the cap, they could extend him now, push some of that money into next year when the cap will be a lot bigger, and reduce some of the cap space this year.
Ogbah was consistent last season and the Dolphins would effectively eliminate a potential hole at defensive end should Ogbah hit free agency. That wouldn’t be ideal. The Dolphins have the draft capital to replace him should he leave but why let him go?
The Dolphins could get him, again, cheaper on an early extension rather than see him play at a higher level this year and then try to retain him. Of course, like Baker and Gesicki, the Dolphins could view him as replaceable and thus would potentially be looking at compensatory compensation in the draft.
