The Miami Dolphins are not likely done with adding running backs

The Miami Dolphins have a decent running back unit but it is becoming clear that they are not quite done adding to that part of the roster.

During the 2021 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins reportedly tried to trade back into round one to draft Alabama’s, Najee Harris. That failed. They reportedly wanted to draft Javonte Williams with their first pick in round two. Denver traded up one spot ahead of Miami, and Miami failed.

In March, it was reported that the Dolphins were making a strong offer and push for Green Bay running back Aaron Jones. Jones opted to re-sign with the Packers and the Dolphins failed to add a runner. Now, it appears they missed again.

Last week the Lions released Kerryon Johnson a talented running back who didn’t quite live up to expectations in Detroit. The Eagles claimed Johnson off waivers and now, it appears that the Dolphins had put in a claim for him.

If this is true, and frankly we have no reason to doubt that it is considering that is likely easy information to come by, it is clear that the running back room is not a final unit and that the Dolphins are indeed looking to improve when and where they can.

The Dolphins are likely going to play the waiting game and see what runners are released before, during, and after training camp. It is a smart play after not landing a top running back in the draft and while they did add Gerrid Doaks in round seven, he is still a project.

Miami enters the 2021 season, for now, with Myles Gaskin as the starter with Malcolm Brown and Salvon Ahmed behind him. The Dolphins roster thins afterward with Patrick Laird, Jordan Scarlett, and Malcolm Perry. You could probably throw Lynn Bowden, Jr. into that mix as well.

While we won’t go so far as to say that the Dolphins will be putting in claims for every runner that hits the market, it is safe to assume that they will at least entertain the idea of adding another body to the unit and possibly someone who is capable of starting if need be.
